Pipelines are an important part of the worldwide energy transport for gas and oil. Especially pipeline maintenance is important to maintain the quality of a pipeline and all components. Corrosion is the number one enemy of a pipeline, this involves careful inspection and in case of problems a professional procedure of pipeline cutting and pipeline welding process. Best practice is the use of “cold cutting”, to cut the pipe without the use of “hot cutting” methods with torches and flames. Another big advantage to cold cutting compared to thermal cutting is to avoid the creation Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), which is harmful for the structure of the material.
The HAZ is located between the weld and the unaffected base metal and is that area of metal that has not been melted and has undergone changes in properties as a result of being exposed to relatively high temperatures during thermal cutting. E-Work pipe clamshell cold cutting machines are perfect tools for cutting, beveling and weld preps on pipelines, due to the fact that no heat-affected zone is created (cold cutting). The pipe cutting process is spark-free with reduced noise and provides a perfect weld seam preparation for thick-walled steel pipes.
